Most of these are open to interpretation because someone may find a clever way to counter one of these that hasn’t been thought of by someone else at the table where they play. With Web Sense, I would rule that another creature with that ability on the same web could make a Stealth check to avoid detection… They know the nuances of how that sense works and can use that knowledge to “attempt” to counter that sense.įlight would easily counter tremorsense… leviation, riding a Tensor’s Floating Disc or flying carpet, etc. Even then, if it’s a creature that possesses some intelligence, the GAPING hole that would create in their echolocation would raise suspicion at the very least. The one that I think would be the most difficult to counter would be Blindsight from ECHOLOCATION… Short of creating a magical area of silence, I can’t think of ANYTHING that would prevent the creature from noticing you while within it’s range of blindsight. Red dragons in my fantasy world of Forgotten Realms is danger enough without dragons see through magic and that works fine for me. If blindsight sees through invisibility on your fantasy world, then it does. Websense too, if you have the ability and the target is in a web your in contact with. Vibration on a surface send a message of a creatures location without the need of visible spectrum light. Tremorsense is another special sense that could negate a ring of invisibility. If Bilbo used his ring of invisibility with blindsight radius of a red dragon or a bat, I’d rule the bat could see you as Invisibility doesn’t change your material make up. Invisibility removes the visible spectrum of the subject, which I feel would negate blindsight (sight is in the name).Ī red dragon doesn’t have a stat feature like echolocation (a specific subset of blindsight) like a bat that uses sound wave to bounce of objects. Magic in a spell or item would fulfill Jeremy Crawford’s condition of magic. The question of hiding from creatures with blindsight was put to Jeremy Crawford, Lead Designer of Dungeons and Dragons 5e. So can a rogue with a high stealth roll, and nothing else, hide within the blindsight radius of a red dragon? Perhaps even out of line of sight behind a corner or pillar (like Bilbo?). Dungeons and Dragons 5e Player’s Handbook, Chapter 8 – Adventuring, p183. BlindsightĪ monster with blindsight can perceive its surroundings without relying on sight, within a specific radius.Ĭreatures without eyes, such oozes, and creatures with echolocation or heightened senses, such as bats and true dragons, have this sense. Red dragons, and all true dragons for that matter, have a little known sense called blindsight. It’s not going to be a cake walk for the rogue to sneak in and cherry pick magic items from the hoard. Then again your high level rogue with expertise in the Stealth skill might scoff at those ‘low’ PPs. Trying to sneak around and hide are nearly impossible. ![]() They have a Passive Perception (PP) of 14 as babes to as high as 26 for ancient wyrms. It’s well know that red dragons sleep with one eye open. But, what if things go really badly for the adventuring party? Could they really hide from an ancient red dragon? Perhaps like The Hobbit’s Bilbo Baggins did in Smaug’s lair? How else to challenge an adventuring party of high level characters if not with dragons. So nice of you to deliver yourself.” - Mistinarperadnacles Hai Draco or ‘Mist’ – Ancient Red Dragon with blindsightĭungeons and Dragons 5e has some of the most feared creatures ever dreamt up. And I’ll call you… supper? Yes, it’s about time for a light, early supper. “ You must forgive me for not knowing anything about you, but I’ve been so out of touch. ![]() Mist looking forward to dining in with self delivered adventurers. ![]()
